PATTERSON HIGH SCHOOLWORLD AND CLASSICAL LANGUAGESSpanish I2nd Semester 2008Señorita ZimmermanTransportation and Engineering Academy - Room 120I. Introducción¡Bienvenidos a la clase de Español Uno! This is an introductory course into Spanish language and culture. Spanish is a romance language which means it comes from Latin. While learning the Spanish language you will find many cognates (a word in two languages that looks and sounds alike and means the same thing) which will help you to understand the language. You will be required to speak only in Spanish, unless the occasion warrants the use of English, as this will help you to develop fluency in the language. II. Units of Study➢ Introducción - Introduction ➢ ¡Mucho gusto! - Nice to meet you! ➢ ¡Organízate! - Getting organized ➢ Nuevas clases - New classes ➢ ¿Qué haces esta tarde? - What are you doing this afternoon? ➢ El ritmo de la vida - Everyday life ➢ Entre familia - Family ➢ ¿Qué te gustaría hacer? - What would you like to do? ➢ ¡A comer! - Time to eat II. Materiales
➢ Textbook: Ven Conmigo (used in class) ➢ Workbooks: Ven Conmigo (used in class) ➢ We will also be using various supplementary texts and the internet III. Método
Learning a language consists of four components: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. You will be required to participate in all four components as well as learning about the culture of various Spanish speaking countries. Because learning a language takes time and persistence, you will have homework to complete every night and you will also be expected to study as there will be frequent vocabulary quizzes. IV. GradesA. Your grade will be based on the following components: ➢ ASSESSMENTS Which may include: Tests, Quizzes, and Projects 40% ➢ ASSIGNMENTS Which may include: Classwork, Homework, and any other work assigned to the student 30% ➢ PARTICIPATION Which includes: The student’s participation in the Class, Attendance, and any verbal assignments 30%
B. Students should always come to class on time and prepared every day. You should bring your binder, paper and pens or pencils everyday along with anything else that you might need. FOR EACH LATENESS TO CLASS, ONE PERCENTAGE POINT WILL BE DEDUCTED FROM YOUR QUARTER AVERAGE! C. Late work will not be accepted! If you miss a class you must have your absence excused by your academy principal in order to be able to make up any work. You will have one week to make up your work from the day that you missed. D. Cheating or copying will NOT be tolerated! I expect you to be proud of YOUR work, and I would rather have you try your best and re-do the assignment instead of copy off someone else. This is something that I take very seriously. If you are cheating, you will both receive HALF of the grade (example: a 90 becomes a 45 for each person). V. Class Expectations – AS DECIDED BY STUDENTS (that would be YOU)

But, if you absolutely can’t meet during lunch or after school, talk to me and make an appointment to see me in the AM. • I am willing to work with you… always. PERFORMANCE TRACKING! • Everyone will begin class with 5 participation points for the day. • As long as you complete the day’s assignments, are focused and on task, and adhere to our class rules, you will earn all 5 points. • You will receive your Performance Evaluation Report every Friday (or on the last school day of the week). • Performance Evaluation Reflections are due at the end of class on Friday. • Points may be lost if: o The Hacer Ahora is not completed, a student is talking or being disruptive, classwork or other assignments are not completed, etc. OBJECTIVE MASTERY TRACKING! • We will track our progress on tests and quizzes to determine if we have mastered the material from the current unit. • Mastery = 80% → such as, 4/5 or 5/5 or 8/10, 9/10, 10/10 • If you MASTER an objective, you will earn a sticker on our class chart. • BE PROUD OF YOUR HARD WORK! ☺ I am.
